Timed Entry

Finding the sweet spot of full bloom Aspens is often a matter of lucky timing. There's a bit of a story here... Do you remember the 2020 season of Covid-19 when U.S. national parks required timed entry because so many more people wanted to be in nature? This is the Bear Lake trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. It is often overlooked as too easy when you can go in the other direction and reach Dream, Emerald Lake, or The Loch for more exciting adventures. But when it comes to seeing the Aspens in all their gold glory, this trail is brilliant. Take it to the Bierstadt Lake & Moraine for equally stunning views all the way to Hallett's Peak.

Hike a little over three miles from the Kenosha Pass trailhead to reach this expansive view of the South Park valley and western and northern mountain borders, the Collegiate Peaks (14'ers) and the Mosquito Range of the Rocky Mountains. I loved illustrating the Aspen's yellow pop of color in this simple black and white expanse.

The hike from Kenosha Pass on highway 285 leads to this view. An Aspen grove brightens the vista overlooking Fairplay in South Park, Colorado. The treeless mountain tops are among the famous Colorado 14'ers.
